Calcivis appoints two new board members to bolster US expansion

Edinburgh-based dental imaging technology pioneer, Calcivis, has strengthened its board with the appointment of two highly experienced industry figures as Non-Executive Directors to support its ongoing commercialisation in the US market.

Heather Tombley, President and Chief Operating Officer at DentalEZ brings more than 20 years in health and dental care in major American companies including GE Healthcare and ConMed Corporation. Heather is based in Pennsylvania and has brought medical devices to market within the US throughout her career as well as driving manufacturing excellence and promoting positive, growth-focused cultures.

With a 28-year career in the medical device business, Simon Jackson has held senior roles at major medical device businesses including as Chief Executive of Frontier Medical Group. He holds a number of other advisory roles, including as Non-Exec Chairman at medical plastics producer, Inpress, and Non-Exec Director at international medical device producer, Summit Medical Group.

Heather and Simon join an seven-strong board led by Chairman Dr John Brown. Their appointments follow a £5 million funding round, led by the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) and supported by Maven and long-term investor, Archangels earlier this year. Both the funding and subsequent appointments are key elements of Calcivis’s strategy to bring its flagship imaging system to the US market.

Based at Edinburgh’s BioQuarter, the CALCIVIS Imaging System harnesses bioluminescence to give dentists a live view of demineralisation in real time, which can create a modal shift from restorative to preventative dentistry by identifying tooth decay earlier. The system has pre-market approval by the US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

To capitalise on the lucrative US dental market, Calcivis opened a US headquarters in Milton, Massachusetts in January of this year.

Adam Christie, CEO of Calcivis, said: “Heather and Simon have unrivalled experience within both the dental and medical instruments sector which will be incredibly beneficial in directing our US expansion strategy.

“Our presence in the United States is growing, with a commercial team and now senior Non-Exec representation in that market. Our device is user-friendly and market-ready, and we are confident that the Calcivis Imaging System will significantly improve patient care and enable restorative dentistry to move to a more preventive approach.”

Heather Trombley said: “The US dental market is growing rapidly, and Calcivis’s technology can harness that growth to steer the market towards a more preventative approach. I’m excited to join Calcivis and I’m looking forward to supporting Adam and the team to bring the product to market.”

Simon Jackson added: “Having led other medical device businesses and supported their international growth, I’m proud to be joining Calcivis as a Non-Executive Director. The company is in an exciting place and is well-positioned to maximise on the opportunities offered in the US market.”

Sarah Hardy, Head of New Investments and Director at Archangels, commented: “Archangels has supported Calcivis since 2012, and these latest appointments underline the company’s scale of ambition and opportunity in the US market.

“Calcivis’s novel imaging technology has the potential to revolutionise dentistry, moving away from a ‘drill and fill’ approach to a more preventative model – echoing wider medical trends.”
